Day 2

June 29, 2012 - Paddling Maple Lake and Relaxing

It had turned rather windy over night and we even had a short bit of rain, neither of which prevented me from having a great sleep. However, it did show that I was not set up in the most ideal location if the wind continued. I was starving so the first task of the day was breakfast, scrambled eggs and bacon.

After cleaning up from our meal we decided to take a paddle along the south-western bay of Maple Lake. The wind was blowing at a good clip from the west and we thought we'd take it easy by paddling with the protection of the shore. Overall it was an unremarkable area, but we managed to get a canoe load of fire wood and observe a beaver swimming past.

The island we were on is technically two islands joined by a small sandy area, likely when the water level is higher you wouldn't be able to cross from one to the other. After our paddle we explored the other site on the northern island and just lounged about.

Both islands were well covered with blueberry bushes, but only the plants growing with a southerly exposure had berries ready. The northerly plants hardly had any berries and what there were weren't ready. The southerly plants were covered in ripe blueberries that we picked away at the entire weekend.

Ever the optimist, Markus tried his hand at fishing off the rock cliff that faced the little channel with the near shore. We had our dinner, which for me was a rather disappointing pork chop, enjoyed the sunset and a fire before retiring for the evening.
