Day 3

June 30, 2012 - More Relaxing on Maple Lake

Up at a civilized hour we continued our relaxing over a couple of cups of coffee, mulling what we should do today. I did find enough energy to pick some of the abundant blueberries. In the end we decided that we would tour the lake despite the wind and ominous looking clouds moving in.

We started our paddle with a visit to the north shore island camp site. Not a bad site but for some reason the thunderbox was installed on two pieces of log, raising it even higher than a normal box which would make it rather uncomfortable in use.

We continued on, traveling east along the north shore of Maple Lake. The clouds kept piling up with sunshine breaking through making for some nice photos. We stopped at a sandy beach where we saw a good sized snapping turtle swimming around, he was too elusive to get a good picture of.

Through out our stay on Maple Lake we observed birds of prey flying around. We think they were Merlins, you would hear them shrieking and then could see them attacking each other. It looked like they were protecting their territory or something.

Markus headed off to nap for the afternoon, so I did some more exploring around our islands.

It was our last night and we still had a pile of food leftover, so we made a heroic attempt at eating it. We didn't want to have to portage it back out. We basically each made a meal for two or three people and tried to eat as much as we could!

The clouds that had been threatening all day never amounted to anything and we had a beautiful sunset.
